Requirements for Hiring a Domestic Helper in Singapore

Hiring a domestic helper in Singapore involves following Ministry of Manpower (MOM) guidelines. Typically, employers must:

  • Be at least 21 years old and not be an undischarged bankrupt.

  • Have the financial means to support a helper.

  • Provide suitable accommodation, meals, medical care, and rest days.

  • Ensure helpers are only assigned appropriate and legal household duties.

For more information, visit the MOM’s official guide.

How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Maid in Singapore?

The cost of hiring a domestic helper in Singapore varies depending on the route you take. Through an agency, placement fees can range from SGD 1,500 to SGD 6,000 or more. With EmployHelpers, you skip agency fees entirely – our platform plans start from SGD 39/week, and you connect with helpers directly.

Other costs to budget for include the monthly levy (currently SGD 300, or SGD 60 with the concessionary rate for eligible households), maid insurance (from around SGD 200–350/year), and the helper’s monthly salary (typically SGD 600–900 depending on nationality and experience).

Types of Domestic Helpers Available in Singapore

Transfer helpers are currently employed in Singapore and looking to change employers – they can typically start within 1–2 weeks since they already hold a valid work permit. Finished contract helpers have completed their current contract and are available immediately. Ex-overseas helpers have previously worked abroad (often in the Middle East or Hong Kong) and are returning to Singapore. Fresh helpers are new to domestic work but may bring other professional experience. You can filter by contract status on our platform to find the right fit.

Why Hire a Domestic Helper?

Domestic helpers provide essential support for busy families, working professionals, and elderly individuals. With the right match, you can enjoy:

  • Peace of mind knowing your home and loved ones are cared for.

  • More quality time for family, work, and leisure.

  • Flexible support for household management, childcare, and eldercare.

We encourage you to do both, virtually and in-person, where possible. For agency helpers, the coordinators will assist with that.

For direct hire, you are encouraged to use our WhatsApp button to arrange for a time for video interview and/or physically meet in person.

Yes, many helpers are available for direct hire from overseas. You can filter profiles by current location. However, we will not be able to advise on the work permit as every country has its own laws. We would refer you to our trusted employment agencies instead.

You can filter and search by skills, experience, and specific needs to find the right helper for your household.

Yes. In Singapore, you are legally allowed to hire a domestic helper directly without going through an employment agency. This is commonly known as “direct hire.” You handle the process yourself – from finding a helper to applying for the work permit through MOM. Platforms like EmployHelpers make this easier by letting you browse verified profiles, contact helpers directly, and access hiring guides and contract templates. Direct hiring can save you SGD 1,500-6,000 or more in agency placement fees.

The standard monthly levy for a foreign domestic worker is SGD 300. However, eligible households can qualify for a concessionary levy of SGD 60 per month. You may be eligible if you have a child aged 16 or below, an elderly household member aged 67 or above, or a person with disabilities living in the household. The levy is paid monthly to MOM and is the employer’s responsibility.

No, you do not pay SGD 5,000 upfront. The security bond is a requirement from MOM, but it is bundled together with insurance policy, which typically costs around SGD 250 per year. The bond is only called upon if the helper goes missing or if specific conditions are breached. It is not an out-of-pocket expense for employers.

A transfer helper is currently employed by another household in Singapore and wishes to change employers before their contract ends. They already hold a valid work permit, so the transition is usually faster. A finished contract helper has completed their full contract term with their previous employer and is available to start immediately. Both types are already familiar with living and working in Singapore, which can make the adjustment smoother for your household.
